Welcome to New Mexico Cancer Care!

This is a brief introduction to welcome you and to familiarize you with our office procedures.

New Mexico Cancer Care (NMCC) is a group of medical oncologists providing oncology and hematologic services.  Our physicians practice as a group, therefore we would like you to be familiar with each of our doctors.  Although you will have one physician as your “primary” doctor at NMCC, there may come a time when you will be seen by other members of the group.

When you arrive for your appointment, please check in with the receptionist.  Please make the receptionist aware of any changes in your address, phone number or insurance coverage.  You will be expected to pay your insurance copay at the time of your appointment.

If your doctor has requested lab work to be drawn, Christus St Vincent Lab is conveniently located within our building.   Please notify the receptionist that you are here for lab work.  The lab will be notified of your arrival.

You will be escorted to the exam room by a Medical Assistant (MA).  The MA will review your medical history and take vital signs.  Please advise the medical assistant of any medications you are currently taking, any changes that have been made since your last visit, and any refills needed.

Please be aware that every effort is made to see our patients in a timely manner.  However, there may be times when appointments take longer than the allotted time.  We apologize in advance for any unexpected delays you may experience.  Rest assured that your physician will take the time needed with you to address your needs and concerns.

The infusion room is staffed by a group of specially trained Registered Nurses (RNs) called “oncology nurses”.  These nurses work as a team with your physician to ensure the best care possible.  The oncology nurses administer your treatment and are available to answer questions you may have about your care.  In addition, the oncology nurses help manage side effects from your treatment.  The RNs are also a great resource for other support services available to you as our patient.  Please feel free to confide in your nurse.  They are there for you!

If lab work is required, you will be asked to schedule a lab appointment up to one week prior to your doctor visit.  This will allow enough time for the doctor to review your lab results.  Our scheduling department will assist you in coordinating any outside testing that your doctor has ordered.  Again, please allow enough time between your procedure and your return visit to allow your doctor to obtain the test results.

Return visits are arranged through our scheduling department at 913-8930.  It may be necessary for you to leave a message, as our scheduler may be busy assisting other patients.  You can expect a return call within 24 hours.  If you need immediate assistance, please call our main number (913-8900).

All medications prescribed by NMCC physicians will be documented in your medical chart.  If you need refills for any of these medications, please notify us before all your medication is gone.  We will need 24 - 48 hrs to arrange for your medication to be refilled.  In some instances, State Law may require a written prescription.  In this case, it may be necessary for you to pick up the prescription at our office.  All medication refills are handled by our triage nurse at 913-8919.   If you are unable to speak directly with the triage nurse, please leave a message and allow 24 - 48 hours for your request to be completed.

A triage nurse is available Monday thru Friday, 8am to 5pm, to address any questions regarding your care at NMCC.  If the triage nurse is busy helping other patients, you may have to leave a message on voice mail.  You may expect to receive a return call within 2-3 hours.  If you have an emergency or an urgent call, please call our main number (913-8900) and ask to speak to a nurse immediately.   If you are calling after 5pm or on weekends, our answering service will take your call and notify the doctor on call.  If you have an emergency after hours, please call 911.

Our research department works closely with New Mexico Cancer Care Alliance to offer the most current clinical trials.  Your doctor may mention research studies for treatment of your disease.  Feel free to ask your physician about research studies available.  Our research department will be happy to provide you with information or to answer your questions.

In compliance with HIPAA regulations, your medical record is protected at NMCC.  If you wish to share your medical information with family members or others, we ask that you sign a release giving your permission to do so.  This will be kept in your chart and referenced before any information is released.  If you need your medical records copied, please allow 24 hours for us to honor your request.

NMCC will file all insurance claims on your behalf.  We ask that you keep us updated as to any changes in your insurance coverage, or other demographic information.  As long as we have your current information, we will take care of all billing issues.

If you have insurance that requires a referral from your primary care physician, we ask that you assist us in obtaining the referral and keeping it current.  We will notify you if a new referral is needed.

Many insurance companies require a co-payment with your visit.  If you have a co-payment, you will be asked to pay it at the time of your visit.  We ask for your cooperation in paying your copay when you register at the front desk.

If you are experiencing financial difficulty, please communicate this to our staff. There are various programs for which you may be eligible.  We can help you to apply for these benefits.  We will also work with you in regard to your bill at New Mexico Cancer Care.  Please do not hesitate to speak with the Financial Counselor if you have questions or concerns about your bill.  The Financial Counselor can be reached at 913-8945.

Our goal is to make your visit to our facility as comfortable and informative as possible.  If you have any additional needs or concerns, please feel free to contact our Office Administrator at 913-8951.  After all, your care is our highest priority.  We value your suggestions on how to serve you better.
